Best Android 2.3 mobiles under Rs. 20,000 – December 2011 edition

  • Sharebar

This time I am skipping the top 5 Android mobile under 15k since there is not much change in the list from the last story. A couple of months back Android phones below 15k was the hottest segment for Android mobiles which now seems to be shifted to Sub-10k range. We are also getting some noise from 15-20k range where the mobile biggies (especially Sony Ericsson) have started focusing. Probably because they can easily provide a complete Android phone for this price range.

Lets see which all are best in the lot

Top 5 Android 2.3 Gingerbread phones below 20K in India

1. Sony Ericsson Xperia neo V : Rs. 17500

sony-ericsson-neo-v

Successor of earlier launched Xperia Neo. Ask a feature and you get it here in Xperia Neo V. You won’t get a feeling of ‘oops this is missing’. I recommend it.

Features:

  • 3.7 Inches, 480 X 854 Pixels, 16M Colors, LED-Backlit LCD, Capacitive Touchscreen
  • Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine, Scratch-Resistant Surface
  • 5 MP Camera with Autofocus and LED Flash, Video – 720p@30fps
  • Secondary VGA camera
  • Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread (Upgradable to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 1GHz Scorpion Processor, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon
  • Wi-FI, 3G, GPS, DLNA, HDMI out

Missing:

  • Now you must be greedy like me if you are wishing it could have a 4-inch screen or an 8 Mega Pixel camera :D

Other details

2. Motorola Defy Plus : Rs. 17900

motorola-defy-plus

Successor of earlier launched Motorola Defy. Defy plus is both water resistant and dust proof. Looks awesome but misses front camera for video calling. Recommended only if you are an outdoor enthusiast. Else, Neo V is better by far (excuse me Moto fans).

Features:

  • 3.7 Inches, 480 X 854 Pixels, 16M Colors, TFT Capacitive Touchscreen
  • Gorilla Glass, Scratch Resistant
  • 5 MP camera with Autofocus and LED Flash, Video @30fps
  • Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread
  • 1 GHz TI OMAP 3620 processor
  • Wi-FI, 3G, GPS, DLNA

Missing:

  • No Front camera
  • No HDMI port

Other details;

3. LG Optimus Black P970 : Rs. 18990

lg-optimus-black

For all those who aren’t ready to compromise below a 4-inch screen, neither looking to pick one from the Galaxy S series.

LG claims it has the brightest screen on a phone ever. For a change the front camera is 2 MP unlike 0.3 MP on all other phones. Comes with an excellent Video player. Suitable for Multimedia buffs.

Features:

  • 4.0 Inches, 480 X 800 Pixels, 16M Colors, IPS LCD, Capacitive Touchscreen
  • Gorilla Glass display
  • 5 MP Camera with Autofocus and LED Flash, Video – 720p@30fps
  • 2MP Secondary camera
  • Android 2.2 Froyo (Upgradable to Android 2.3 Gingerbread)
  • 1GHz TI OMAP 3630 Processor
  • Wi-FI, 3G, GPS, DLNA

Missing:

  • No HDMI port
  • No Android 2.3 onboard
  • Audio quality bit disappointing

Other details

4. Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray ST18i : Rs. 18500

xperia-ray

Another gem from SE for camera lovers. Xperia Ray comes with a whopping 8 Mega Pixel camera, however, compromises on screen size front. Other features more or less similar to the above listed Xperia Neo V.

Features:

  • 3.3 Inches, 480 X 854 Pixels, 16M Colors, LED-Backlit LCD, Capacitive Touchscreen
  • Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine, Scratch-Resistant Surface
  • 8 MP Camera with Autofocus and LED Flash, Video – 720p@30fps
  • Secondary VGA camera
  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread (Upgradable to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 1GHz Scorpion Processor, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon
  • Wi-FI, 3G, GPS, DLNA

Missing:

  • No HDMI port

Other details

5. Samsung Galaxy S Plus I9001 : Rs. 20990

samsung-galaxy-s-plus

Well, this one will increase your budget a bit above 20k, but I don’t wanted to exclude this beast out of the list just for the sake of 1k. Samsung Galaxy S plus comes not only with the big screen (that’s too Super AMOLED) but also with a big heart, I mean, big processor of 1.4 GHz.

Features:

  • 4.0 Inches, 480 X 800 Pixels, 16M Colors, Super AMOLED LCD, Capacitive Touchscreen
  • Gorilla Glass
  • 5 MP Camera with Autofocus, Video – 720p@30fps
  • Secondary VGA camera
  • Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread
  • 1.4 GHz Scorpion Processor, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm MSM8255T Chipset
  • Wi-FI, 3G, GPS, DLNA, TV out

Missing:

  • No HDMI port
  • No LED Flash for camera

    Well listings.
Will SE Neo V price come down in near future? So many offerings from tablets makers, why real smartphones are still costly?

    Ashwini,
Thanks for a very informative post and this is exactly I was looking :) . Need a suggestion though

I liked both Neo V and Galaxy S Plus. However, only drawback I see in Neo V is the in built memory which is just 300. I currently use Samsung Monte which has 200 Mb inbuilt memory which I always run out of memory. So, I guess I need a phone with more in built memory

    1. Does installing the applications directly on the memory card work well as good as installing on the phone?.

    2. How much LED flash is useful? (as I haven’t used

    appreciate your time.

    • ashwini
      December 23, 2011 at 3:11 pm #

      1. Not all apps can be installed on Memory card. Some apps like theme launcher, app launcher etc need to be installed on phone. Getting a phone with more inbuilt memory is always good.
      2. LED Flash should be there. It doubles the enjoyment of camera.

Why don’t to you think about Samsung Galaxy R (Rs. 20999). Samsung has confirmed it will be getting Android 4.0 ICS update and it also has a flash. The only down is that you won’t get Super AMOLED screen in it.

BTW, experience of buying from letsbuy.com was horrible.

            Well,

first, tracking number updated to me was wrong. Tracking number that they provided was delivered even before I bought the phone.

second, their phone number is so busy all the time, it took 10 minutes for them to answer, more over, it’s a STD number for me.

third, I can’t even see the order details in the website. They say the website is having some issues. I mean since almost 5 days, even now it’s not visible. I did not expect this kind of outage from a online retailer.

fourth, phone had a offer of Rs 1200 worth accessories, which is not delivered yet. They say they will send it, but you never know until you receive it.

fifth, they don’t respond to emails

            it was a bad experience

    • ashwini
      December 24, 2011 at 2:09 pm #

Nokia Lumia 710 is undoubtedly a great phone, but lacks front camera for video calling… better go for Samsung Omnia W if you are interested in Windows.

In comparison to Android, windows are not bad as well… You can go for it

go for sony ericsson experia neo v, folks! it’s the most hyped phone out there, and not without reason: reasonably priced and feature-packed. this is one phone i haven’t regretted buying. i’ve been using it for three months, and believe me, i fell out of love with all my other phones within a couple of weeks of usage. what worked for me (all its features, actually!): HDMI port (yes, cable included) and upgradability to version 2.3.4 :)

I think, if you extend your budget a bit (to 21000), samsung galaxy R is the best smartphone in above mentioned. It has dual core 1ghz processor, a good 5mp camera, 4.2 inch screen. It dont have amoled screen, but amoled is only good in outdoor usage. It blurs in lower light. And the most important, it has 1gb ram and 8gb internal storage(like galaxy S2). No smartphone in the range have the specification.

    i want a phone with-
    -a lot if internal memory,
    -an HDMI port,
-an 8megapixel cam with 720p HD
    -a great gaming experience
    -a good sturdy build
    -a great GPU
    -an expandable memory
    -an ICS upgrade

so my finalists are – Xperia Neo, Google Nexus S and LG Optimus 2X
i can buy the Neo or Nexus S, but they lack quite a few features. So i wanna buy the LG Optimus 2X. Is it a good buy? i know its icons suck big time and everything, but i can use Go Launcher to alter that and ive heard that ICS renders stock icons useless. Should i go for it? I would also really like to know the price. I hope its not over 20 Grand.
    Thanks!

I’m going for Xperia ray, It is most compact amoung all these phones, Please tell any suggestions, I want 8mp and all other features are not very much diffrent from neo v and screen is smaller but better in quality because of 295ppi and high resolution..
I think it is better than Neo v!!!!!!!!
